European Elk

European Elk

The European Elk is the biggest living representative of the deer family and can reach a shoulder height of 2.30 m (7'6"). In autumn and winter male animals have antlers, which are shed in January or February. Elks feed on sprouts, leaves, twigs, herbs and water plants. Rutting season: autumn. Gestation period: 8 months. Acute senses of smell and hearing. They can see movements very well and can reach a maximum speed of 60 km/h (38 mph). Weight: up to 650 kg (103 st): Maximum age: 20 years.
