The Eurasian lynx is the largest species in the cat family (Felidae) in Europe. Its characteristics are black tufts of hair on its ears, a ruff of fur that resembles a "beard", a short tail and longer hind legs. The mating season for lynxes is from February to March. Gestation lasts for about 70 days, and results in the birth of between one and four kittens. As a predator, the lynx feeds largely on small to medium-sized mammals as well as on birds. Due to intensive hunting, the lynx was eradicated in Germany about 100 years ago. Several projects to reintroduce the Eurasian lynx to the wild have recently resulted in a considerable lynx population in the Harz region and in Bavaria.
